To receive Ethereum, you need an Ethereum address. The good news: you don't need to register anywhere and it's completely free. In this article, we show you three methods โ from the fastest to the most secure.
Method 1: MetaMask โ The Fastest Way
MetaMask is the most widely used Ethereum wallet and can be installed as a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, or Brave. Setup takes about three minutes.
Step 1: Download MetaMask from the official website metamask.io. Make sure you're on the real site โ there are many phishing copies.
Step 2: Click "Create a new wallet" and set a strong password. This password only protects access to MetaMask on this device โ it is not your private key.
Step 3: MetaMask shows you a 12-word seed phrase. Write it down on paper. Don't screenshot it, don't save it to the cloud. These 12 words are the key to your coins.
Step 4: Confirm the seed phrase. After that, you'll see your first Ethereum address โ done!
MetaMask is ideal for getting started and for interacting with DeFi protocols and dApps. For larger amounts, we recommend adding a hardware wallet.
Method 2: Hardware Wallet โ The Most Secure Way
A hardware wallet like the Ledger Nano or Trezor stores your private key on a physical device. Even if your computer is compromised, your coins remain safe.
Step 1: Buy a hardware wallet directly from the manufacturer. Never buy from third-party sellers or used.
Step 2: Set up the device and write down the seed phrase (24 words for Ledger). Store it safely.
Step 3: Install the Ethereum app on the device and create an Ethereum account.
Step 4: Connect the hardware wallet to MetaMask via Settings โ Connect Hardware Wallet. This lets you use DeFi while maintaining hardware-level security.

Method 3: Crypto Exchange โ The Most Convenient Way
Platforms like Coinbase, Kraken, or Binance automatically create an Ethereum address for you when you register. You don't need to worry about private keys or seed phrases.
The downside: the exchange controls your private key. You depend on the platform being secure and solvent. The crypto wisdom "Not your keys, not your coins" applies especially here.
For getting started, an exchange is fine. Once you hold more than a small amount, you should set up your own wallet and transfer your coins there.
Which Method Should I Choose?
For a quick start: MetaMask. In three minutes you have an address and can get going immediately.
For larger amounts: Hardware wallet + MetaMask. The combination of security and convenience.
For complete beginners: Exchange to buy, then gradually transition to your own wallet.
